Arie Rustiche for Bb clarinet & piano
For the ‘Nacht van ontdekkingen’ I will give a lecture on ‘Time’.
Music is a temporal art form. Time is the space in which sound unfolds. The composer explores / discovers this space and gives the different musical parameters (such as pitch, rhythm and dynamics) a place so the compositional idea is conveyed as sharply as possible. During the compositional process, the composer thinks, weighs and measures, but in the end the listener experiences the composition. Against the background of a number of philosophical thoughts about ’time’ and on the basis of a recent work for clarinet and piano ‘-Arie Rustico’ (2017) – composer Patrick van Deurzen will show how choices in organizing time lead to the final composition. During the lecture examples and the composition are played live by Jasper Grijpink – Clarinet and Anastasia Kurilko – Piano.
